Here at the Navigator, staff members can hold many student positions in addition to being a writer.  One set of these positions is the publication team consisting of the editor-in-chief, the assistant editor-in-chief, and the PR representative.  These positions are not really known to anyone outside the Navigator, so this article is here to change that.  Come aboard today and learn about each of the publication team’s positions.

The editor-in-chief is the highest and most powerful position at the Navigator and involves managing most aspects of the Navigator.  John C., who is currently in this role, says that the editor-in-chief is responsible for making “sure every publication gets up on the website on time.”  He also says that this position is “responsible for the content that is posted” as well as ensuring that “everything is appropriate for the school newspaper.”  On top of all these tasks, the editor-in-chief is a person that the other staff members can look to for general advice, help, and encouragement.  Also, this role acts as an instructor through teaching the assistant editor-in-chief the tools necessary to become editor-in-chief in the future.  The editor-in-chief acts as the head of the publication team through being an integral part of the publishing process.

The assistant editor-in-chief role is to be the apprentice of the editor-in-chief.  This involves doing any small tasks that the editor-in-chief asks to be done.  While doing these tasks, the assistant editor-in-chief is taught by the editor-in-chief about the Navigator website and the details of the publishing process.  One task this role does is to work with journalists if they have any small questions or issues that they would like help with.  This serves to divert some questions to the assistant editor-in-chief to lighten the overall load on the editor-in-chief.  Also, the assistant editor-in-chief acts as a proofreader of the Navigator website after each publication to ensure that the Navigator has few to no errors.  In addition to this, this role is responsible for small tasks surrounding the Navigator website.  The assistant editor-in-chief is a part of the publication team through acting as an apprentice to the editor-in-chief.

The PR (Public Relations) representative holds another important position on the Navigator publication team.  This position involves spreading the word about the Navigator across NorthStar Academy.  According to Jared L., who is currently holding this position, this takes the form of the PR representative setting up “different posts and announcements for the Navigator.”  This role also involves sending out forms to NorthStar Academy students for writers to get student’s opinions and thoughts for their articles.  In addition to this, this position involves posting and advertising for the Navigator around each publication.  Through doing these things, the PR representative acts as the advertising part of the publication team through spreading the word of the Navigator across NSA’s online campus.

Overall, everyone on the Navigator does not just have to write. Rather, there are positions such as the editor-in-chief, assistant editor-in-chief, and the PR representative that staff members can also enjoy.  These add new responsibilities and new opportunities to a staff member’s Navigator experience that adds to the writing elements of the Navigator.  Also, check out next month’s publication if you are interested in all the other staff positions that enable the Navigator to sail each and every publication!
