For the Elect
By Jared L.
Many schools across the board hold special elections for a Student Council system. However, while some schools may have limited roles, NorthStar Academy has a vast array of positions. The system that helps fill these roles can be somewhat complex at times, so this will give a guide on the process!
There are four overarching role types in the Student Council system.
Leadership Team: This team consists of the secretary, vice president, and president roles. The purpose of this team is to communicate clearly and directly with both the student body and the other teams inside of Student Council (Stuco).
Communication Team: This team is a newer combination of the new and the old. This team consists of the Ad Coordinators and the Content Creators. Their purpose is to create appealing, interesting visuals for public events or announcements. This group also creates reels to help connect the student body.
Outreach Team: This team also holds the Welcome Committee Leaders, but pairs them up with Club Coordinators as well. This team's goal is to interact directly with the student body, and to create public events and games. This could range anywhere from direct, club-related games to more broad interaction opportunities.
Representatives: This team consists of each grade representative and is sent to interact specifically with each grade level. This could range from helping with study calls to simply showing people that there are others in their grade level!
So how does one run for a position? Well, the answer to that is quite easy! First, one waits to see if they have been nominated by a friend. This isn’t required but can be encouraging! If you have not been nominated, fret not, your opportunity to run has not ended. The next stage is application, which runs from March 25 to April 7. In this time, you can apply for a position and check the requirements for a role you're interested in. Make sure to read each requirement carefully and thoroughly, as you may not know what you're in for otherwise. Once the form is filled out, you can move onto the next step. The next step is application review. This is a time of waiting, as officials will look at your application and accept or deny your application. This runs from April 8 to April 14. The next step is campaigning! In this time, it’s your job to get the people’s attention. Just like presidential campaigns, you must clearly show your goals and try to get people to vote for you! This may seem daunting at first, but worry not, as this can be done in many, many creative ways. This process runs from April 15 to April 21. Last but not least is the voting stage. This is the moment in which all your work may pay off! The student body will have access to a form in which to vote for the next year’s Student Council personnel! This runs from April 22 to April 28.
Overall, this should be a fun process. Have fun with your campaigning, and don’t be afraid to be yourself! The you will bring in the most people for your vote, so campaign strongly! If you don’t get the position you wanted, there is always the option to get into a position that doesn’t need election. Experience is key! Plug yourself in and get involved, as that will increase your chances for the next year.
