A Story from a Very Grateful High School Journalist

By Caylee L.

When I look back on my time at NSA, a string of mundane decisions truly changed my time as a high school student. Today, I am beyond honored to be the Editor-in-Chief of the NorthStar Navigator for the 2020-2021 school year.

I first heard about the Navigator becoming a class when I was in my English class. Mrs. Meyer, our wonderful teacher advisor, was talking about a school newspaper that hardly anyone knew existed. At the time, perhaps I remembered seeing some sort of file on FirstClass being called “Navigator,” but it was all very vague. So, naturally, I requested more information.

English has always been one of my favorite subjects, but I was never too fond of writing until I began writing more. When I heard that the Navigator could be looking for editors, I began to seriously consider joining. There was a brief moment of hesitation when I realized that I would be writing articles semi-regularly, but I decided that I would at least try out the class to see how I liked it.

It’s no surprise ending that I absolutely loved the Navigator. There was never a shortage of topics to write about and it was nice to get to know different students at NSA through interviews. As I began writing more and more, it became easier to communicate with readers. I wanted every single person that was taking the time to read my writing to get something out of it. Whether they learned something about a student through a spotlight or they entered an art contest that the Navigator wrote about, I wanted everyone to feel included at NSA. To anyone who is thinking about joining a certain class or even becoming a journalist for the Navigator, a simple decision could lead to a world of possibilities.

Writing is something that is so personal to me, I’m not sure I can express my feelings towards it very clearly. I am so thankful for the opportunities that I have been given to write about wonderful people and a wonderful school. I am thankful that I was able to serve as the editor-in-chief this year and bless more people by working on the Navigator.

Finally, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped make the Navigator a great newspaper, including our readers. Without readers, the Navigator would just be a bunch of rambling high school journalists getting together and hanging out every other Friday. To our writers, or “rambling high school journalists” as I put it, thank you for showing up, submitting your stories, coming up with topics that you are interested in writing about, and most importantly putting your name at the top of your articles so I know who wrote what story. Thank you to Mrs. Meyer, who does more for this newspaper than she realizes and is always happy to see us in class. I truly cannot express my thanks to her enough. To the students the Navigator has interviewed, the staff at NSA who has helped us countless times, the people we contacted who never got back to us, and everyone in between, thank you.

My last thank you goes to you, my reader; thank you for listening to the writings of this rambling high school reporter.
