The Image Manager Position

Over the summer, the Navigator dealt with some copyright issues over an image. The Navigator took special precautions to make sure this never happened again. Jared L. and I were given responsibility for this job, but what does that mean?

The image manager is in charge of making sure that the Navigator does not get in trouble over copyright issues anymore. As some may have noticed, the website went down over the summer and when it came back in October, dozens and dozens of articles were missing. To be more precise, about 190 articles were not available on the website.

So, slowly over the course of this school year, Jared and I, along with other members of the publication team, have worked on making those articles available to the public. We do this through two ways. We brand an image with the NorthStar logo, and we cite it. This is done for images in the old articles and those that we are currently publishing.

At the beginning of the year, staring down at 190 articles, I felt confident that Jared and I could get this done in six weeks. That goal was very unrealistic, yet at the beginning I was really chugging along. However, in December, I suffered a burnout from doing these images. It was very repetitive work, and I became very frustrated with it.

Later, in February, we were having a Navigator meeting, and Mrs. Meyer was checking in with everyone on how they were doing at their position. They talked to the editors and then to those on the publication team. Lastly, they came to the image managers. It felt like everyone else was working harder than me. I told Mrs. Meyer that I did not think we would finish updating all the articles this year.

Throughout February, I was a little behind on my other classes, so I was working on those instead of the Navigator. Then at another Navigator meeting in March, Lydia N. and John C. were saying how they were working very hard on the website and even having meetings throughout the week. I was definitely not spending as much time on Navigator work as they were.

I made up my mind that I really needed to get serious about working on these images. During the week that followed, I got the last 112 articles updated with new images. It was an uphill battle, yet it was so satisfying to look back over the website with all the articles updated with new, copyright-free images. Looking back over this past year, I am so thankful for everyone’s patience with me, even when I may have been slacking.
