Little Dreamers
By Rebecca C.
There have been various articles written by the Navigator staff about middle school and high school kids who attend NorthStar Academy. However, there seemed to be a lack of information about the elementary students at NSA. There may be fewer elementary students active on Microsoft Teams than students in other grades, I do believe that these fourth, fifth, and sixth graders need a bit of representation in the Navigator too. So, without further ado, let us take a little peek into the lives of Elijah, Sarah, Haesol, and Allen!
Elijah is a fifth grade student who has been at NSA since the beginning of 2021. At only nine years old, Elijah has a small Youtube channel with almost thirty subscribers. He posts short stop motion animation videos that he makes with his Lego toys. Some of his most viewed videos include a short Captain America animation and an instructional video titled “How To Make a Lego Chitauri Blaster.” When asked why he likes making stop motion videos, Elijah said, “I like doing stop motion because I like the end result because it shows that if you work hard on something and stay consistent with each individual image, you'll succeed and have a great video.” The young animator lives in De Doorns, South Africa with his family and their miniature schnauzer named Tokyo.
Sarah is a twelve year old girl in sixth grade. She began her adventure at NorthStar about two years ago. She enjoys many things, one of them being soccer. She has been playing soccer since she was about three and a half years old. When asked what she liked best about attending NSA, Sarah stated that she loves being able to think for herself. She says, “At my old school I was pretty much told the answer. Now I can think about questions in a different way.” Some of Sarah’s favorite pastimes include reading, writing, and talking about her favorite movies and books. She and her older sister live with their family in Tennessee with their adorable dog called Darla.
Haesol is a student who lives in South Korea. She is in fifth grade and likes to play video games and bake. Like Sarah, she appreciates how NorthStar encourages her to think. “I like that NSA asks me to think and teachers help me expand my thinking.” Haesol hopes to open her own cafe when she is older.
Allen started going to NorthStar when he was in fourth grade in August of 2020. He likes riding his bike, swimming, playing video-games, and reading. He also likes to play tennis with his father. He says his favorite thing about going to NSA is that he gets to meet people from all around the world. “In one class, you might be with people from many different continents!” Allen said. Allen and his family live just outside of Tonasket, Washington on an apple farm with their Doberman Pinscher named Ginger. Allen hopes to be a farmer like his dad when he grows up.
They may be less well known than older kids, I do believe it is clear from these small snippets that these elementary students have great skills and big dreams-- something that I’m sure will take them far.
